Beauty and Skincare

Many people use artificial methods to improve the look of their skin, such as anti-wrinkle creams, ointments, cosmetics, pills and plastic surgery. But, an increasing number of people are using HBOT to help rejuvenate their skin.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Personal Beauty & Skin Care

Many models, performers and top business people have all embraced the use of HBOT to enhance their beauty.

Dr Ellen Marmur, associate professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, says:

“Anything that promotes healthy circulation also helps keep your skin healthy and vibrant.”

This is how Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy helps. During a HBOT session, the body receives pure oxygen at increased atmospheric pressure. This boosts the body’s ability to circulate oxygen, allowing it to seep through into areas where blood flow is poor or blocked and helps skin to rejuvenate. HBOT promotes fast repair of damaged skin cells, diminishing the appearance of wrinkles and helping the skin to heal after trauma, injury or surgery. HBOT has shown promising signs for weight loss, fast nail growth and reducing cellulite, and is recommended for helping skin disorders such as eczema, acne, psoriasis and rosacea.

HBOT is a very simple, non-invasive, pain-free procedure. Here at the Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Centre in London, our patients enter a single-person, purpose-built and state-of-the-art chamber and breathe in pure oxygen at up to 2 times the normal atmospheric pressure.

The Structure and Function of Your Skin

Your skin is actually an organ (your biggest) and is composed of 2 different layers that work together – these are known as the Epidermis (top layer) and Dermis (inner layer). Essentially, the overall function of the skin is to hold the contents of the body together, although it also does much more than this as you’ll discover below…

The dermis layer contains specific biological products as follows;

Reticular fibres

  • Which to help to disperse any physical forces that are applied to the skin.

Collagen

  • Which makes it stronger

Elastin

  • To make it stretchable just like elastic

There are also many specific functions performed by your skin – some of the most common ones are;

Protection

  • From everyday wear and tear, to fighting off infection or stopping unwanted chemicals from being absorbed, through to stopping harmful UV rays via production of melanin (which is where your pigment arises)

Body temperature maintenance

  • Depending on whether you are in a hot or cold environment, your skin will adapt and act accordingly to help adjust your temperature up or down (e.g. sweating when hot or getting goosebumps when cold are 2 common examples)

Absorption and excretion

  • Whilst skin is generally water-resistant, it can absorb liquids which is why certain treatments are applied topically (to the skin). It also can push out or excrete small amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) gas

Storing valuable nutrients and water

  • Your skin is such an intelligent organ that it also stores water in its cells for emergencies such as when the volume of your blood falls below certain levels. As well as this, it keeps certain fatty acids and glycerol locked away so they can be broken down and converted into extra energy if your body needs it.

Please note that although HBOT having been used for many years as a therapeutic intervention for a variety of indications and as well as beauty and skin rejuvenation purposes, the evidence for its use is not proven by “randomized prospective controlled clinical experiment or trial” which is considered to be the strongest form of scientific evidence by conventional medical standards.

It is always recommended that clients visit their GP or Consultant if there is any medical problem before commencing HBOT.

In accordance with UK and EU legislation we confirm that there is no intention implied or otherwise that HBOT is given so with the intention of it being a cure, diagnosis or as a preventative for any disease. Any references, studies or testimonials on this website do not imply that similar results will occur when the same therapy is experienced by another.
