HBOT offers the following benefits for patients who undergo plastic, cosmetic and reconstructive surgery:
Much faster post-operative recovery time; some HBOT users heal up to 75% faster than non-users
Dramatically reduced bruising, inflammation and pain
Improved healing of post-operative scars
Lower risk of infection and rejection of implants
Plastic surgery patients who use HBOT return to their normal lives more quickly, with increased confidence and better health overall.
How does HBOT improve plastic surgery recovery?
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is a simple, pain-free and non-invasive way of giving your body more oxygen. Patients breathe in pure oxygen in a pressurised chamber, which floods the body with up to 15 times more oxygen than it is able to get through normal respiration.
The increased levels of oxygenation speed up the production and release of nutrients, amino acids, stem cells and new blood vessels to repair damaged body tissues, fight infection and improve circulation. The knock-on effect of this for plastic surgery patients is faster and more effective post-operative healing and better aesthetic results.
Studies and everyday cases are demonstrating the capacity of HBOT to cut cosmetic surgery recuperation periods in half, which is why cosmetic and plastic surgeons often incorporate or recommend HBOT for post operative recovery. Wounds heal quicker and scars heal better; post-operative bruising and swelling are dramatically reduced; and increased oxygen also helps prevent the rejection of implants and skin grafts.
HBOT has proven particularly effective for laser peels, where lingering redness causes a problem for many patients. HBOT gets rid of the redness quicker. Following liposuction, HBOT reduces the swelling much faster, resulting in less post-operative discomfort.
The natural antiviral and antibacterial properties of oxygen mean that increased oxygenation through HBOT boosts the immune system, resulting in fewer post-operative infections for plastic surgery patients.
Many cosmetic surgeons incorporate HBOT as part of their post-operative protocols, and HBOT is a recommended therapy for patients who have problems with healing or low immunity. Here at the Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Centre in Chelsea, London, we highly recommend a course of HBOT sessions to improve your recovery time and enhance the aesthetic results of your surgery.
How pressure affects oxygen
We’ve told you how Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy improves plastic surgery recovery. The next question is why it works so well.
Think of HBOT like this. A can of cola is highly pressurised, which is why it pops when you open it. You’re releasing the pressure on the liquid inside. Why is the can highly pressurised? Because the increased pressure enables the liquid to hold the carbon dioxide, the ‘fizz’. Once you let that pressure out, the cola starts to go flat.
In other words, increased pressure improves a liquid’s ability to absorb gas. The increased pressure in the can improves the capacity of the cola to absorb CO2. Likewise, the increased pressure in a hyperbaric chamber improves the capacity of the blood to absorb oxygen.
In normal atmospheric conditions, we take in 21% oxygen (because that’s all that is available in the air), and the oxygen travels in the haemoglobin in our blood. At the Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Centre, our patients breathe in 100% oxygen at 2 times the normal atmospheric pressure. (This is a far sight more than most clinics, which only offer 1.4-1.6 times the normal pressure.) These conditions saturate the tissues with oxygen, forcing it to circulate in the plasma and other fluids as well, allowing the body to absorb 10-15 times more oxygen.
With HBOT, you become hyperoxygenated. This doesn’t just boost your recovery from wounds, bruising and swelling following surgery, and ward off infections and complications. HBOT is also a highly effective complementary therapy for an array of health conditions, including burns, diabetic ulcers, non-healing wounds, Lyme disease, chronic fatigue/ME, multiple sclerosis, heart attacks, Alzheimer’s and sports injuries.
HBOT actually reduces the need for plastic surgery in the first place
HBOT works as a skincare and beauty aid, as well as a proven anti-ageing remedy. So if you’re thinking about going under the knife to get rid of wrinkles or lines, consider HBOT first — the natural and non-invasive alternative. By hyperoxygenating our bodies and optimising the health and performance of our cells, HBOT repairs damaged skin tissues, reduces the appearance of wrinkles and improves the general health of our skin. HBOT is also known to promote weight loss and cellulite reduction, and is a recommended and effective for skin disorders like eczema, acne and psoriasis.
