CEOs, managers, sports professionals and film stars already use HBOT regularly for injury and post-operative recovery, performance enhancement, biohacking and anti-ageing. At the same time, more and more people suffering from chronic fatigue/ME and fibromyalgia are incorporating HBOT into their care plans. These highly mysterious and incurable conditions are among the hardest to treat, but increasingly doctors are witnessing positive results when HBOT is used.
In addition, HBOT is of proven benefit to patients suffering from:
- Brain injuries
- Carbon monoxide poisoning
- Cognitive disorders in the elderly
- Interstitial Cystitis
- Leg Ulcers
- Parkinson’s Disease
- Peripheral Neuropathy
- Referred Pain
- Soft tissue infections
- Varicose Ulcers
HBOT is particularly effective for chronic wounds, the bends, multiple sclerosis, burns and hearing loss
Hyperbaric oxygen was originally only used to treat the bends, aka decompression sickness, in scuba divers. The condition is caused by a diver surfacing too quickly, leading to joint pain, stiffness, rashes, headaches, visual disturbances, and in severe cases, paralysis and death. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is the standard and recommended treatment for all cases of the bends.
But doctors have since expanded HBOT’s remit. In addition to the conditions mentioned above, there is strong evidence for using HBOT to enhance healing of chronic or non-healing wounds. Controlled studies show that chronic wounds heal faster and better with HBOT, particularly diabetic foot ulcers. HBOT also lowers the risk of partial or total limb amputation for ulcer sufferers.
HBOT has also been found to be highly effective in helping to heal burns when used adjunctively with multidisciplinary burn care. One study conducted on burns victims from a mass casualty found that adjunctive HBOT and multidisciplinary burns treatment resulted in improved sepsis control compared with standard treatment without HBOT.
An MS sufferer from Massachusetts who could hardly stand and used a battery-powered cart to move around said this after her third HBOT session:
There is also clinical evidence that for sufferers of idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss, HBOT can significantly improve hearing.
Why does hyperbaric oxygen work?
Every breath we take contains 21% oxygen, 78% nitrogen and 1% trace gases. It’s the 21% oxygen that we need. Our basic functions, including energy production, digestion, circulation, temperature, immunity and healing, are all powered by oxygen. Without it, we’d be dead in a matter of minutes.
How Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy works is twofold. Firstly, you breathe in 100% pure oxygen, 79% more than you breathe in normally. Secondly, you’re in a pressurised chamber, where the heightened pressure conditions increase the oxygen-carrying capacity of your blood. These two processes combined cause your body tissues to become saturated with oxygen, putting you in a state of hyperoxygenation.
Why does hyperoxygenation work for improving the symptoms and conditions mentioned above? In the broadest sense, oxygen powers our healing and immune systems, so getting more of it will greatly enhance and expedite those systems. Oxygen is a natural anti-inflammatory, antiviral and antibiotic medicine, which is why hyperoxygenation is such an effective means of boosting our resilience to disease and infection. In addition, increased oxygen speeds up the production and release of nutrients, amino acids, stem cells and new blood vessels to repair damaged body tissues.
Here at the Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Centre in Chelsea, London, patients enter a state-of-the-art hyperbaric chamber and breathe in pure oxygen at 2 times the normal atmospheric pressure. Our chambers are single-person only for optimal privacy and respite. Our maximum pressure conditions are more than most clinics offer, allowing your body to absorb 10-15 times more oxygen than it can through normal respiration. We want to give our patients the best chance of fast, effective recovery and improved general wellbeing.
HBOT sessions at the Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Centre are administered by hyperbaric expert Robert Pender, who says:
Your symptoms will be discussed in an initial consultation with hyperbaric expert Robert Pender, which will help with forming an accurate estimate on the number of hyperbaric sessions you will need.
