Candidiasis can occur in the throat, mouth or vagina. When it occurs in the mouth, it’s more commonly known as thrush. When it spreads deeper into the throat, it is called esophagitis. In the vagina, it’s better known as yeast infection, vaginitis or vaginal thrush.
Symptoms of candidiasis in the mouth and throat include cracking at the corners of the mouth, red spots, white patches, a sore throat, nausea and loss of appetite. Symptoms of vaginal candidiasis include severe itching, soreness, burning and a whitish discharge.
In most cases, candida infections are bothersome but rarely life-threatening. However, when it spreads to other parts of the body like the heart valves, brain, kidneys and eyes, or to the bloodstream, candidiasis can become serious and/or fatal if not properly treated.
A healthy immune system generally keeps candida in balance and prevents overgrowth. Candidiasis is more common or persistent in people with compromised immune systems, such as pregnant women or people with diabetes or AIDS. It is also common in people taking antibiotics; this is because the antibiotics kill the helpful bacteria that control candida, allowing it to grow unchecked.
Boosting the body’s immune system is the key to helping heal candida infections. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is a simple, pain-free, non-invasive and highly effective means of doing exactly that.
What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?
Oxygen is the world’s most natural drug, most important nutrient, and the element most essential to all life on Earth. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is simply a way of giving the body more oxygen than it can get through normal respiration.
HBOT was originally only used to treat decompression sickness or “the bends” in scuba divers. In the last few decades, doctors have discovered the almost immeasurable benefits HBOT yields for a wide variety of illnesses, including stroke, multiple sclerosis, chronic fatigue or ME, fibromyalgia, diabetes, Lyme disease and bone fractures.
HBOT works in two ways:
- Pure oxygen intake: Ordinarily we take in 21% oxygen with every breath. The rest is nitrogen and trace gases. During a HBOT session, you take in 100% oxygen through an oxygen mask.
- Oxygen under pressure: Normally the 21% oxygen we breathe is dissolved in the haemoglobin in our blood. During a HBOT session, you’re inside a pressurised chamber breathing at increased atmospheric pressure (approximately 2 times normal). The high-pressure conditions open up your cells, causing the extra oxygen to travel in the plasma, the watery component of the blood.
The knock-on effect of this is that your body becomes hyperoxygenated. Hyperoxygenation is scientifically proven to:
- boost energy
- improve blood flow
- promote detoxification
- boost the immune system
- speed up the production and release of nutrients, stem cells and amino acids to repair damaged body tissues
- improve overall physical and neurological health
The fact that HBOT boosts the immune system is particularly useful for candidiasis sufferers. By enhancing the abilities and activities of the white blood cells, HBOT helps keep candida growth in check and at harmless levels.
Is there any evidence that HBOT wards off candidiasis?
In short, yes. K.K. Jain MD investigated the effects of HBOT on the growth of candida albicans and found that growth in vitro is inhibited by prolonged exposure to hyperbaric oxygen. Publishing his findings in the Textbook of Hyperbaric Medicine Volume 3, Dr Jain said that prolonged HBOT is “fungicidal for candida albicans and several other candida”. He recommended that HBOT be considered as a complementary therapy for candida when standard antifungal agents have failed.
Antifungal medication is the standard course of medical treatment given to candidiasis patients. There is evidence that HBOT can help enhance the performance of these antifungal medicines and therefore, speed up healing. An in vitro study by T.M. Gudeswicz, J.T. Mader and C.P. Davis found that the combination of antifungal drug amphotericin B and HBOT at 1.2 times the normal atmospheric pressure was able to inhibit candida growth. It also found that amphotericin B and HBOT at 2.1 times the normal pressure was able to kill the infection. In other words, HBOT improves the ability of amphotericin B to fight candidiasis.
In addition to in vitro studies demonstrating the efficacy of HBOT in combating candida, hyperbaric expert Robert Pender, has seen its success with his own eyes on countless occasions.
Robert Pender, who is co-founder of the Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Centre in Chelsea, London, says this:
HBOT sessions at the Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Centre are administered by hyperbaric expert, Robert Pender, himself. Our state-of-the-art chambers are single-person only for optimal privacy and relaxation, and our maximum pressure conditions are more than most clinics offer. In broad terms, our HBOT sessions allow your body to absorb 10-15 times more oxygen than normal, giving your immune system a powerful kick.
