What is HBOT?
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a simple, painless, non-invasive way of giving the body more oxygen than it is able to get from the air. It involves administering pure oxygen at twice the normal atmospheric pressure inside a private, purpose-built chamber, enabling the body to take in 10-15 times more oxygen than normal.
Deforestation, gas emissions, factories and other kinds of modern pollution have caused a 3% drop in the level of oxygen in our atmosphere. This is just one of the reasons why people are looking for ways to get more of it.
The main reason, though, is that oxygen is vital for life, and extra oxygen improves what our bodies can do.
Why is oxygen so important?
Oxygen, which makes up about 21% of the atmosphere, is essential to human life for three reasons:
- It is one of the body’s basic building blocks. All of the body’s major components — water, protein, carbohydrate and fat — contain oxygen.
2. Oxygen helps bring about certain chemical reactions within the body that result in the production of energy. Energy is required for all major bodily functions such as circulation, respiration, digestion, and maintaining a constant body temperature.
3. Oxygen is necessary for cell growth and regeneration and acts as a natural antiviral and antibiotic. In other words, oxygen powers the healing process.
Extra oxygen through HBOT enhances these basic functions, significantly improving our physical and neurological health.
Why does HBOT speed up the healing process?
Nature dictates that healing can’t take place without appropriate oxygen levels in our body tissues. In cases where people have circulatory problems and conditions like diabetes, brain injuries and strokes, adequate oxygen is unable to reach injured areas, so the body’s natural healing process can’t function properly.
It’s scientifically proven that hyperbaric oxygen can help to correct or improve a wide range of serious health problems. This is because the pressure conditions in a hyperbaric chamber allow oxygen to dissolve into our plasma and other bodily fluids, rather than just our haemoglobin (the usual carrier of oxygen around the body). This raises our oxygen levels significantly above that which can be achieved at normal pressure, giving an extra boost to our body’s vital functions.
It also allows oxygen to reach areas where our circulation is poor, fast-tracking the healing process in those areas. And since oxygen is a natural antiviral and antibiotic, extra oxygenation boosts our immunity, enhancing our white blood cells’ ability to kill infections.
Though HBOT is not a replacement for general medicine, it has been proven time and again to speed up the healing process and improve symptoms for a wide range of illnesses and disease.
HBOT as a way to help the body heal from sports injuries and Alzheimer’s
For years, conventional medicine thought of HBOT only as a treatment for decompression sickness or “the bends”. This has now changed, with HBOT becoming increasingly common in general practice. This is because of the robust yet underrated power of oxygen to heal. Doctors are now using HBOT to help the body recover from non-healing wounds, inflammation, carbon monoxide poisoning, infection, chronic fatigue/ME, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, heart attacks, strokes, Alzheimer’s and sports injuries.
Here at the Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Centre in Chelsea, London, we’re giving hope to hundreds of patients suffering from all kinds of debilitating conditions. And because extra oxygen is such a powerful resource for life improvement, we’re giving biohackers and sports stars the chance to boost their performance and endurance and live longer, fuller, happier lives.
